Our Giant Outdoor Xylophone – Multi Coloured will be sure to draw attention and be a real statement piece in your outdoor classroom.  A true ‘investment piece’ and designed to stay outdoors all year round.  Available in 8 or 11 key options and can be bought as single pieces or with 1 or 2 benches.

Children will enjoy exploring musical notes and making music in their leisure time as well as supervised lessons outdoors.  6 pairs of beaters are included and group participation will instil confidence in more hesitant children helping them learn how to work together, listening to each other play and taking turns.

Hand-made in the Highlands of Scotland from local, sustainable timber, such as Larch and Douglas Fir which have a nice resonance as well as being fully durable.  The keys can be re – stained if you wish with a varnish or stain without the sound being affected.

Please note as the keys are stained the colours will fade through continuous weathering. A colour chart accompanies each xylophone so the keys can be re-stained if required but the functionality of the instrument will not be affected.

Each instrument is built to last and to withstand the unpredictable British weather.  There’s no need to treat the wood unless you wish to for aesthetic reasons.  The instrument can be treated with a varnish or stain without the sound being affected.

The xylophones are tuned to your specification.  The most popular 2 tunings are pentatonic and diatonic.  The Pentatonic scale consists of 5 notes (and multiples thereof) while the diatonic is the typical western ‘do-ray-me-far-so-la-te-do’ scale.  Pentatonic scales are good for improvisation and for rhythmical playing whereas the diatonic is most useful for playing certain songs.

Unless otherwise stated, our giant xylophone is supplied in the pentatonic scale.

The xylophone keys are tuned at an average moisture content, and seasonal fluctuations in tuning are likely to occur in times of highly wet/ dry conditions. The majority of the time, the xylophone will stay in tune with itself and, as the xylophone gets older, the more stable the wood becomes in relation to its environment and so the more stable the tuning will be.

Requires self assembly, but full instructions are included.  Please allow 2 people approximately 1 hour to assemble.
